The Pros and Cons of Sectional Sofas and Standard Sofas

Mar 27, 2023

A sofa can be one of the most important pieces of furniture in any home. Today's sofa buyers have a wide range of sizes, shapes, and styles to choose from. One of the biggest decisions you will make as you start sofa shopping is whether to choose a sectional sofa or a living room set.

What does each style bring to the table? What might make you reconsider? Here are a few pros and cons of both choices.

The Pros of Sectionals

Perhaps the biggest reason that people love sectional sofas is their comfort factor. These are inviting and comfortable places for one or many people to snuggle up and enjoy their favorite activity. They're most popular—and best suited—to private areas where the family gathers for play, movie nights, and hanging out with friends.

The right sectional also gives structure and design to the room. A sectional in a large, open floor plan, for instance, creates a defined zone and stands out where smaller pieces would be overwhelmed. Even in a small room, it can make the space feel larger. And you get maximum interior design impact with just one piece of furniture.

The Cons of Sectionals

The boost in comfort and seating capacity may come with a price: inflexibility. Although modern design has made sectionals more versatile, you may find it difficult to change the look and feel of your sectional down the line. This means fewer options if your family size changes, you want to change the focus of the room, or you move to a new home with a differently sized room.

The sectional also limits how traffic navigates around it. Sectionals generally form a large, immovable barrier that people must work around. That could easily make traffic flow less efficient or uncomfortable and often force people to walk in front of televisions and conversation groups. The specific layout of your room and the sectional itself determine how much impediment it forms.

The Pros of Sofa Sets

Many sets feature a sofa, a smaller loveseat, and one or two chairs. You can arrange these elements in any configuration you wish. While most are placed together in a single zone, they can also be distributed around the room or even placed in different rooms for different needs. That flexibility is the key draw for buyers.

In addition, sets are easier to make adjustments to over the years. You might scale it up with more individual pieces, or you could remove some for a smaller room later on. Want to change the look of your sofa set? Add in one or two new elements such as colorful or modern chairs. Even rearranging the components can change the entire look and feel of a set.

Finally, a sofa set is usually more formal and elegant than a sectional.

The Cons of Sofa Sets

Depending on the set you purchase, you may have to spend more money to achieve the same seating options that a sectional would provide. Each element is designed to hold a limited number of people, and there's often little way to squeeze more in. If you like to entertain often or have a large family, these may not be the most practical styles.

To get the same levels of comfort as you would in a sectional, you may need to tweak your set more. You might need more components, such as ottomans or chaise lounges, for watching TV. Perhaps you'll spend more time finding the right placement for each piece of furnishing. Or you and your guests may need to move furniture around more often. This can get complicated.
